Monday Mural: California Quail

The quail is the state bird and the poppy the state flower.  The mural can be found at MacArthur and 108th Avenue close to the San Leandro border.  It was created in 2011 as a collaboration between several people and agencies.  The primary artists are Dan Fontes and Caroline Stern who were recruited by the methadone clinic whose wall carries this mural.  Fontes has previously been featured here and here.  This neighborhood has more than its share of crime and blight.  Although the wall has several tags, none are written on the mural.  A recent newspaper article indicates that the mural is valued by the local community and is a bright spot in a beleaguered neighborhood.

  2. That is so well done that I am still not 100% sure the bricks are there or have been removed for the mural.

  7. Nice to have a state bird and a state flower. In the Netherlands we don't have those I think.the mural is very clear in it. I like it.

  10. This one is a beauty. They have removed ricks and stuccoed over the space to create a smooth surface for the painting. That is great! And I am happy to read that the community respects the mural and leaves it alone, even in an area with lost of desperation.
